Per Eddie Hearn, Are We Close To Seeing Katie Taylor Vs. Cris Cyborg?
While Bellator’s Scott Coker has been looking to keep Cris Cyborg as an MMA fighter, the Bellator Featherweight Champion has been interested in competing in boxing bouts. Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn may be looking to set something up for her.
Hearn talked with The Sun regarding booking Katie Taylor’s next few fights. The WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring Lightweight Champion is a hot commodity and has several matchups planned for her. Do those plans involve Cyborg?
“She wants Persoon, she wants [Amanda] Serrano, she wants [Cecilia] Braekhus, she wants [Cris] Cyborg,” Hearn ended up saying. “I’m not saying she’s done after that, but that’s what motivates her.”
Taylor (15-0) made her professional debut in 2016. The 2012 Olympic gold medalist is currently scheduled to face off against Delfine Persoon on August 22 during the “Matchroom Fight Camp” finale. She was supposed to face Amanda Serrano before the bout was nixed. If she were to beat Persoon in a rematch, bouts with Serrano and Braekhus could be next for her.
Braekhus (36-0), the undisputed welterweight champion, is currently scheduled to face off against Jessica McCaskill on August 15 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. There have been rumors of a Cyborg-Braekhus bout taking place, but nothing has come to fruition yet.
“Me and Cecelia Braekhus always talk back and forth,” Cyborg went on to say. “But, you know, I’m training. I could see if she’s able to fight, then I could do fight too… I think everyone is going to be a very good match for me. It’s going to be a great fight. I like to challenge myself. I never look for the easy way. I like to train hard and make the best fight for my career, for my fans.”
Cyborg (22-2, 1NC) signed a promotional deal with Bellator MMA after being let go by the UFC. She ended up beating Julia Budd at Bellator 238 to win the Featherweight Championship. As a result, she became one of the only fighters to hold gold in Bellator, the UFC, Strikeforce, and Invicta. Cyborg was also granted a boxing license in 2017.
