Petr Yan vs. Aljamain Sterling Added To UFC 256 Card, New Main Event Set

Aljamain Sterling is finally getting his chance at UFC gold.

Sterling has been calling for a shot at the UFC Bantamweight Championship since his quick submission finish over Cory Sandhagen back on June 6. Petr Yan is the 135-pound champion. While UFC President Dana White hadn’t fully committed to booking the fight in the past, he has ultimately decided to give Sterling the title opportunity.

Yahoo! Sports’ Kevin Iole took to his Twitter account to reveal that during an interview with White, the UFC boss confirmed Yan vs. Sterling as well as the new main event for UFC 256.

“I did an interview with Dana White a few minutes ago. He confirmed that Petr Yan vs. Aljamain Sterling will be [the] co-main event of UFC 256 on Dec. 12 in Vegas. Nunes-Anderson will be the main.”

As mentioned in the tweet, UFC Women’s Featherweight Champion Amanda Nunes will put her gold up for grabs against Megan Anderson. The bout was supposed to serve as the co-main event of UFC 256 with Kamaru Usman vs. Gilbert Burns headlining. ESPN’s Ariel Helwani reported that Usman vs. Burns will not be happening at UFC 256 due to “The Nigerian Nightmare” needing more time to prepare.

UFC 256 is set to take place on December 12. The card is scheduled to be held in Las Vegas although it is unclear whether or not the UFC APEX will be used or if there will be an attempt to have a live crowd.
