Pettis-Holloway Now For Interim Featherweight Belt

Max Holloway vs. Anthony Pettis, originally pegged as the UFC 206 co-main event, will now be moved up to the main event slot of the pay-per-view. The winner of the bout will be the interim UFC featherweight champion.

This presents the opportunity that the UFC will have three champions in one weight division for the first time in its history. The undisputed title is held by Conor McGregor, who is also the UFC lightweight champion, and Jose Aldo holds the interim featherweight title already.

Given the news regarding Pettis-Holloway, the assumption is that McGregor will be stripped of his featherweight belt and Aldo will be promoted to undisputed champion — a title he held until being knocked out by McGregor last December.

UFC 206 took a major hit on Friday morning with the announcement that light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier will be pulling out of the event due to a torn adductor in his groin. Cormier was originally scheduled to defend the title against Anthony Johnson in the main event of UFC 206. Cormier’s injury, however, will keep him out of action until the spring.

With a major change needed for the event with two weeks to go, speculation has run rampant about what the future holds regarding UFC 206. MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani made several tweets on Friday regarding the UFC’s plans.

According to Helwani, the UFC would want to put the interim featherweight championship on the line in the new UFC 206 main event.

The UFC and President Dana White did state prior to UFC 205 that McGregor would ultimately have to surrender, or be stripped of, one of his championships after the event.

At first, Helwani mentioned, the UFC wanted Gegard Mousasi to step up and take Cormier’s place, but it appears that will not come to fruition. In fact, it appears Johnson may not compete on the card at all.
