PFL Announces Location For Events In 2021
The PFL will have its own version of the “bubble.”
PFL was on the shelf all of 2020. The promotion will be making its return on April 23. Showcased on that event will be the lightweights and featherweights.
Many have wondered what the PFL will do in terms of a venue in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. We now know the answer.
The Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey will play host to PFL events this year. Here’s what PFL CEO Peter Murray had to say in a press release.
“PFL is excited to be back on ESPN to showcase our MMA 2.0 product – featuring returning champions, new star signings and next generation SmartCage technology innovation. Our six regular season events will be staged at the world-class Ocean Casino Resort where we’ve held successful events in the past. The property has all of the necessary amenities to support our athletes in a bubble environment to ensure their safety as it relates to COVID-19.”
The news of PFL holding events inside a “bubble” shouldn’t come as a surprise. Back in November, PFL President Ray Sefo told FIGHT SPORTS that the promotion was likely going to be running events behind closed doors.
“I think right now honestly, I’m thinking because it’s our first season back in 2021, I’m thinking that the case may be that we just cater for TV and pretty much like what Bellator and UFC are doing right now. We’ll see but right now, I’m not sure if you’re aware, but the spike in cases is rising especially coming into winter. So hopefully by the time we start, the situation with COVID-19 has slowed down. I guess right now we just have to play it by ear because we really don’t know what tomorrow brings, and so we gotta just play it day-by-day.”
