Isaac Cruz (26-3-1, 18 KOs) is set to challenge WBA super-lightweight champion Gary Antuanne Russell (18-0, 18 KOs) later this year in Las Vegas, with August 22 or September 5 the reported dates — ending speculation over a long-mooted rematch with Gervonta Davis.
Cruz and Davis first met in 2021, with Tank winning on points in a fight that made Pitbull’s reputation. He was the first man to take Davis the full distance since a six-rounder in 2014, and both camps have flirted with a rematch ever since.
Cruz’s team have moved on. The Mexican has also reportedly parted ways with his previous setup and linked up with Eddy Reynoso, the man in Canelo Alvarez’s corner.
Russell claimed the WBA title by stopping José Valenzuela last year and defended it against Andy Hiraoka in February. Valenzuela himself won the belt from Cruz in 2024.
