Poirier Desires Him vs. Nate Diaz, Masvidal vs. Nick

Dustin Poirier doesn’t have an opponent lined up for his next fight yet, but he still yearns for a potential fight with Nate Diaz that nearly happened over a year ago.

After losing a lightweight title fight to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242 in September and undergoing hip surgery, Poirier is anticipating a return to the Octagon sooner than later. He doesn’t know what the UFC is going to offer him, but he’s more than ready for a fight with the younger Diaz brother.

“Of course I would love that fight,” Poirier said. “Not just because of the stuff between me and him leading up to that last fight, but he’s a guy coming up I always wanted to fight. I want to fight guys I’m excited to watch fight. Any time Nate Diaz fights, I’m tuning in, I promise you.

“I’d fight Nate at 170, or 155, or we can make it at 165 and go there. I would definitely do it. Not have to cut a little bit of weight to make it. I’m not a small guy. I’m all for it. Let’s call [UFC matchmaker] Sean Shelby and the UFC right now.”

Poirier and Diaz were scheduled to meet at UFC 230 in November 2018, but the bout fell apart after Diaz complained of the fight’s contract and Poirier went down with injury. In the time following the fight, comments towards Poirier from Diaz got more personal. And while Poirier has his own personal reasons for wanting to face Diaz, he knows, above all, it would be an entertaining war.

“Whether I like the guy or not, I’m a fan,” he said. “I think it would be an incredible fight. That’s why I want to fight him, because I grew up watching the guy fight.”

Poirier has additional ideas that could help build the fight up more — pairing it with a showdown between his American Top Team teammate Jorge Masvidal and Nate’s brother, Nick Diaz. Or even an entire card dedicated to battles between ATT and the Nick Diaz Academy.

Masvidal defeated Nate Diaz in the UFC 244 “BMF” title fight headliner, and in the fight’s aftermath, it appeared Nick Diaz might want to get revenge on Masvidal.

“Let’s do it,” Poirier said. “I train with Jorge, so it makes sense. American Top Team versus the Nick Diaz Academy. They can bring Kron Gracie, we have some 145-pounders who can run it with him. We’ve got Charles Rosa, we’ve got Renato Moicano, we got a squad. I think that would be great.”
