Former UFC interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier (30-10-1, 1 NC) has left the door open on a comeback from retirement, naming Nate Diaz as the only opponent who could bring him back.
Poirier stepped away from the sport last July after losing a unanimous decision to Max Holloway in their trilogy at UFC 318. Poirier and Diaz were on course to meet at UFC 230 in New York back in 2018, only for Poirier to withdraw through injury, as he needed hip surgery.
Poirier made his feelings clear that he still wants this fight after claiming his name was used after Diaz had trouble negotiating his own fight, only for Dustin to then be blamed for it not happening: “I’ll come back to fight him because our fight got away, and he lied, and the fans ran on his side.” The timing is crucial, as Diaz is set to return to MMA competition next weekend, taking on Mike Perry on the undercard of the Ronda Rousey vs Gina Carano card on May 16.
