Poirier Suffers Multiple Injuries After His Loss To Makhachev

Dustin Poirier has numerous injuries following his loss to Islam Makhachev at UFC 302.

The Diamond lost in a fifth-round submission as Makhachev successfully defended his UFC Lightweight Belt. The fight was being billed as Poirier’s potential retirement fight. Poirier walked out to ‘Shine Bright Like a Diamond,’ hinting that it was his farewell bout. While he had some success with his striking, Islam was the dominant fighter.

Defeats to Khabib Nurmagomedov (UFC 242 in 2019) and Charles Oliveira (UFC 269 in 2021) also prevented him from getting the lightweight title. Now that the dust has settled, Dustin revealed the damage he suffered. Yves Edwards also said Poirier had a rib injury before the fight began.

“The way he performed Saturday night, man, that was super impressive to me and nobody knows this, and he’s probably gonna be like ‘Why did you put that out there’ I know Makhachev wasn’t 100 percent, nobody goes into a fight 100 percent, he hurt his ribs like two weeks before the fight and hadn’t wrestled or grappled for two, two-and-a-half weeks. I probably shouldn’t (say it) but to me, it’s more impressive. Against that guy, like you wrestled against that guy with hut ribs, okay, I’m impressed,” Yves Edwards said
