Poirier’s Weight Claim Draws Response From Makhachev
Dustin Poirier alleged that Islam Makhachev weighed over 190 lbs during their lightweight title fight in June 2024 at UFC 302, something Islam denied.
If accurate, the claim would mean Makhachev rehydrated approximately 35–37 lbs in the 24 hours following his official weigh-in at 155 lbs. Poirier, who retired from MMA last July following his loss to Max Holloway at UFC 318 in their trilogy, stated he received the information directly from the UFC’s internal records. Poirier recalled his immediate reaction when stepping into the Octagon at UFC 302, as he noticed Islam’s size. Poirier noted that he weighed 176 lbs on fight night, which would represent a 16-lb advantage for the Dagestani champion. The response from the now-two-division champion was swift, as he shut down the narrative.
“Islam is huge. Hunter [Campbell] from the UFC — I was in his office not too long ago, and they keep records of all the fight-night weights. They don’t release them all, but they keep them. We were talking about the Islam fight, and he told me his weight, and I was like, ‘That’s insane. 192 pounds, I think — something like 190, 191, somewhere around there. I was 176. I looked across at him under the spotlights, and he had veins in his shoulders. I’m like, ‘f—k, this guy is huge,” Poirier said
