The police officer accused of murdering eight-time jiu-jitsu world champion Leandro Lo during a concert Satuarday Night, has turned himself.
Officer Henrique Otávio Oliveira Velozois is accused of shooting Lo in the head during an argument about a bottle of alcohol at Clube Sirio.
According to witnesses, Lo pinned the police officer, who happens to be a purple belt in jiu-jitsu, to try and control a situation that arose after Velozois took a bottle from Lo’s table. When they were separated and Velozois was allowed back to his feet, he pulled out a gun and shot Lo in the forehead. Lo was declared dead hours later.
This was not Velozois’ first run in with the law. As reported by UOL, he was found guilty of assaulting a fellow officer in a night club in 2017, although he received no jail time.
Lo was just 33 years old, and had a long list of accomplishments in MMA. He had eight gold medals in the IBJJF Worlds, and defeated the likes of Gordon Ryan, Andre Galvao, Gilbert Burns, Felipe Pena, and more.
