Porter: Thurman is Better Than Spence
Shawn Porter is quite the prominent name in the welterweight division right now, and it’s not just because he got into an in-ring confrontation with Danny Garcia last week.
Porter is familiar with both WBA/WBC champion Keith Thurman, as well as IBF champion Errol Spence Jr. In fact, Porter has gone the distance with Thurman before, and he is the mandatory challenger to his WBC Title.
And as Porter tells Yahoo Sports (via Boxing Scene), he feels that Thurman is a much better fighter than his IBF titlist counterpart.
“I think [Thurman] has a way of getting fighters to fight his fight,” Porter said. “I think Errol Spence does the same, but I think Keith Thurman is more tactical at doing that. Keith Thurman is that guy that you get in the ring with and no matter how many times you tell him to come or how many times you come at him, he’s going to do what he wants to do, and he’s going to get you to do that. I think I did a really good job of trying to fight my fight.”
I think Errol Spence has the same ability to be aggressive, uses his jab and makes you throw the punches that he wants you to throw, but I just have a feeling that Keith Thurman is just a little bit better at doing that than Errol Spence.
Spence vs. Thurman is a heavily-anticipated bout, but one that seems it won’t be happening until late 2018 or 2019. Thurman is scheduled to make his next title defense in May against a challenger to be determined, while Spence is currently in negotiations for a June title defense against Carlos Ocampo.
