Possible Opponent For Canelo Alvarez Following DAZN-Golden Boy Split

Canelo Alvarez is now free from DAZN and Golden Boy, so who is he looking to fight next?

Canelo had been involved in a lawsuit against DAZN and Golden Boy Promotions. Boxing’s biggest star alleged a breach of contract. He was seeking $280 million in damages and was looking to break free from his contracts.

Eddy Reynoso, Canelo’s manager, issued a statement claiming that his fighter is a free agent. ESPN Deportes later reported that Canelo is free of his deals with DAZN and Golden Boy.

With Canelo seemingly free of his contract, many are wondering what could be next for the Mexican sensation. Mike Coppinger of The Athletic took to his Twitter account to reveal that Canelo wants to fight Caleb Plant next.

“Alvarez hopes to fight in December and is interested in fighting Caleb Plant for his 168-pound title, a bout he’s been interested in for some time. For now, expect Alvarez to field offers multiple promoters and networks as he figures out his next move. But he’s done with Golden Boy Promotions.”

Plant is the IBF Super-Middleweight Champion. He has amassed a perfect pro boxing record of 20-0. Along the way, he has scored 12 wins via knockout. His last fight took place back in February. Canelo is the WBA (Regular) Super-Middleweight Champion.

Canelo hasn’t competed since November 2, 2019. The WBC recently approved a vacant super-middleweight title clash between Alvarez and Avni Yildirim. Whether or not that fight will actually come to fruition remains to be seen. A purse bid has been postponed numerous times.
