Prichard Colon Dies At 33 Following 2015 Brain Injury

After a brain injury from punches to the back of the head in 2015, Prichard Colon was rendered unable to walk or talk, now the Puerto Rican boxer has passed away at the age of 33.

At just 22, Colon was forced to step away from the sport he loved following his first loss in seventeen matches, a controversial fight with Terrel Williams. During the 2015 match, Colon was struck with numerous shots to the back of the head, but the fight continued as the referee didn’t seem to notice the blatant foul. Following the boxer collapsing in the dressing room after the fight, Colon was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with a subdural hematoma, and was in life saving emergency surgery almost immediately.

Following the surgery, Colon slipped into a coma that lasted 221 days, and when he awoke he was in vegetative state from which he would never recover.

Prior to turning pro, Colon competed in the 2012 Olympic games in London. Once he made the jump from armature, he went on an impressive 16-0 run (13 KO), with the fight against Williams serving as his only loss.

Colon’s father revealed the news of his Son’s passing by Facebook post on Thursday.

“Good morning, my people,” Colon’s father Richard wrote on Facebook. “I regret to inform you of the passing of my son Prichard from this earthly world. Now he is in a better world.

“I did everything possible to fulfil his wish, his dream of bringing him on vacation to Puerto Rico as much as he desired, but couldn’t. “Thank you for so many years of love and prayers. As much as you can, please keep us in your prayers.”
