Pro Wrestling’s Biggest Free Agent, Cain Velasquez

Even though he has a UFC contract, former heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez is looking to lock in a home inside pro wrestling’s squared circle.

Per Dave Meltzer of MMA Fighting and the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Velasquez, who has been working with the AAA Lucha Libre promotion, is negotiating with both the WWE and their latest competitor All Elite Wrestling.

While AEW has positioned itself to be the alternative brand to the WWE, they are funded by Jacksonville Jaguars executive Tony Khan and have a national television deal with TNT.

Per sources, Velasquez needs to undergo knee surgery before he signs a long-term deal, but it has not kept him out of the ring for two matches so far this year in Mexico City and New York City’s Hulu Theater.

If Velasquez signs with WWE, the potential for a huge showdown with Brock Lesnar, who Velasquez beat for the UFC title in 2010, could be in play for next year, but for AEW Velasquez acts as an immediate crossover star to help build their “pure sports” mentality.

One thing that helps AEW’s cause is their relationship with AAA, which can allow Velasquez to work for both promotions, which may be attractive to the popular MMA star.
