Prograis, Donaire Advance To WBSS Finals
Regis Prograis has accomplished his dream of becoming a world champion and is now a finalist in the World Boxing Super Series.
The Louisiana native became the new WBA super lightweight champion by stopping Kiryl Relikh in the sixth round in the WBSS semifinals.
Prograis had Relikh in a lot of trouble early in the fight when he delivered a devastating left hook to Relikh’s liver and Relikh went down after a follow-up series of punches by Prograis. Prograis continued to punish Relikh in the following round where he used the left hand to cause a cut on the bridge of Relikh’s nose, causing it to bleed. Prograis continued to dominate the fight until the fight was waved off in the sixth round when it became evident that Relikh was not in a position to turn the fight around in his favor.
With the win, Prograis advances to the 140-pound tournament where he will face the winner of the Josh Taylor vs. Ivan Baranchyk matchup for the IBF title. That fight is taking place in Scotland in May.
In the co-main event, Nonito Donaire delivered a highlight reel knockout over Stephon Young to advance to the WBSS bantamweight finals. Donaire connected on a big left hook to the chin towards the end of the sixth round to retain his WBA title. Donaire will now face the winner of the other bantamweight tournament fight, Naoya Inoue vs. Emmanuel Rodriguez. The winner of the WBSS bantamweight tournament walks away with the WBA and IBF titles.
