Top Rank’s Bob Arum has written off Canelo Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs) ahead of his October WBC super middleweight title fight with champion Christian Mbilli (29-0-1, 24 KOs).
Arum, who co-promotes Mbilli, says the former undisputed champion has nothing left to offer at the elite level and suggested he should hang up the gloves.
“Alvarez belongs on the golf course, not in the ring. I think Alvarez is finished. I like Mbilli in the fight,” Arum
This will be the 35-year-old Cannelo’s first fight since losing his undisputed middleweight crown to Terence Crawford last September. The bout many fans actually wanted — Canelo against David Benavidez — never materialized, so Mbilli steps in for the biggest fight of his career this October in Riyadh in what will be his first world title defense, following being elevated to full champion after Crawford’s retirement.
