Prospect Alejandro Gonzalez Jr. Killed
Mexican bantamweight prospect Alejandro Gonzalez Jr. was murdered in his home city of Guadalajara, Mexico, on Friday.
World Boxing News reports the 23-year-old Gonzalez was found dead in a parked vehicle along with two other bodies, one of whom confirmed to be a relative of Gonzalez’s.
Gonzalez made his professional debut with a draw on March 19, 2010, and gained 22 wins and 2 draws before his first loss, which came at the hands of Juan Alberto Rosas on April 5, 2014. His most memorable highlight came in July 2015, when he challenged Carl Frampton for the IBF super bantamweight title on an edition of Premier Boxing Champions. Gonzalez knocked down Frampton twice in the first round, but ended up losing the fight via decision.
His most recent bout was a draw against Hector Esnar Bobadilla back on Oct. 29.
Frampton and his wife took to social media to lead the outpouring of tributes to the young boxer.
Just hearing the tragic news about Alejandro Gonzalez jr. One of the nicest guys I’ve shared a ring with. RIP Champ #Cobrita pic.twitter.com/3DiCzVjpEv
