Top Rank Protests Lomachenko-Walters Judge
Top Rank, the promoter for both Vasyl Lomachenko and Nicholas Walters — who collide in a huge showdown on Saturday night — has taken issue with one of the judges assigned for the bout.
Carl Moretti, vice president of boxing operations at Top Rank, told BoxingScene that the company requested the Nevada State Athletic Commission that Adalaide Byrd not work the bout. The commission, however, rejected the promoter’s demand.
"We respectfully requested that Adalaide Byrd not be assigned to this fight," Moretti said. "From there it went on to a conversation [with NSAC executive director Bob Bennett] about how she is a good judge. Some judges can have good nights and can have bad nights. But when she has bad nights, she seems to be too far away from the score. Bob defended her left and right. He didn’t wanna listen to our objection."
Byrd has been a controversial figure in the world of boxing and MMA officiating for her scorecards that ended up quite different from her fellow officials in several bouts. Bloody Elbow listed several bouts in which her scorecard ended up as the subject of debate and confusion. These included: giving Gerald Washington a 97-93 win over Amir Mansour that resulted in a split draw in October 2015, awarding Jose Benavidez Jr. a 10-round shutout win over Francisco Santana back in July and, most recently, scoring a bout between Jessie Magdaleno and Nonito Donaire in favor of Magdaleno 118-110.
