Qingdao Judo Grand Prix Day 2 Recap

The women’s  -63kg and -70kg categories and the men’s -73kg and -81kg categories all determined gold medalists at the second day of the IJF’s World Judo Tour Grand Prix in Qingdao, China.

Nami Nabekura of Japan won the gold medal in the -63kg women category. She utilized osoto-gari and ne-waza turnovers, but, ultimately, it was an uchi-mata that led her to victory in the finals over Lucy Renshall of Great Britain.

Erina Ike of Japan managed to come away with the gold in the -70kg women division. Facing another world judo champion in Ye-Sul Hwang of Korea, Ike managed to keep her opposition down throughout the fight with two waza-aris to clinch the top prize.

On the men’s side of things, Uali Kurzhev of Russia prevented a victorious homecoming for China’s Saiyinjirigala. While Kurzhev was admonished for inactivity after 51 seconds, he produced the only score of the bout — a spinning ko-soto-gake for ippon.

Finally, in the men’s -81kg category, Korea’s Jaehyung Lee took home the top medal by defeating the United States’ Nick Delpopolo.
