Queally On Fight With Freire: ‘This Is The No. 1 Contender Fight’
When it comes to personal fights, nothing in Bellator is as intense as the rivalry between Team Pitbull and SBG Ireland. Peter Queally is looking to use the personal issues between the two groups towards his advantage.
Queally (12-5-1) is currently set to face Patricky Freire in a lightweight bout on October 3 at Bellator Dublin. If he was to beat the older “Pitbull” brother, “The Showstopper” may be one step closer to facing Patricky’s brother Patricio, who happens to be the Bellator Lightweight and Featherweight Champion. In fact, he is confident he will be the next man up.
“This is the No. 1 contender fight,” Queally stated to MMA Junkie. “It is. To be honest, Benson and Michael Chandler really is the No. 1 contender fight, if they’re being fair about things, and I understand that. But because it’s his brother, and because of the back-and-forth nature this fight’s going to have and all that’s going to be on the line, when I beat him – I’ll need to beat him convincingly and in an exciting matter – it makes no sense for (Patricio) not to fight me after that.
Joining Bellator last February, Queally is 1-1 with the promotion. In his last five fights he is 2-2-1. Things got a little heated between him and the Freire brothers during the Bellator All-Star Press Conference in New York City a few months ago. According to Leandro Higo through Eric Albarracin, it all started with a tweet towards James Gallagher which was ignored, until Freire got involved. Now, the battle lines have been drawn and tensions continue to rise.
Patricky (23-9) has been with Bellator since 2011, going 16-8 under the promotional banner. On a one-fight win streak, could Freire end up facing his brother if he beats Queally?
Right now, the plan would be for Benson Henderson to face Michael Chandler on June 6. The winner of that could get a shot at the title. Queally, however, is confident enough in his abilities that he can beat Patricky and face his brother, all in a few-month span.
“So I’m fully confident, like 100 percent sure that if I can get past Patricky, I am jumping the queue – let’s be honest,” Queally said. It should be one of the two lads, (Henderson or Chandler), but it won’t matter. This is not what this business is about, as we all know.”
Bellator Dublin is set to take place inside the 3Arena.
