Scott Quigg has missed weight and, while his fight with Oscar Valdez remains on, he is ineligible to win the WBO Featherweight Title tonight.
As reported by Bad Left Hook, Quigg weighed in at 128.8 pounds on Friday, a little less than three pounds over the 126-pound weight limit. Quigg will pay a $10,000 fine to Valdez, who weighed in at 125.8 pounds.
“I’m so focused and disciplined,” Quigg stated in an apology. “[Thursday] I was 3 pounds over, which is normal. I tried and I tried. There’s nothing more that I could do. I apologize to Oscar and his team. I’ve got to stay focused on the fight. But [missing weight] is not acceptable. We’ll deal with it. I apologize to everybody.”
Quigg was not given additional time to lose the excess weight, as the fight takes place in California. The California State Athletic Commission forbids any fighter who weighs in over two pounds above the weight limit to be given extra time to shed the weight. The CSAC cites fighter health and safety as the reason for this measure.
