Quote: ‘Everybody Knows Jon Jones Isn’t The Greatest Striker’
One top Bellator contender at light heavyweight isn’t enamored with Jon Jones’ striking skills.
Jones has long been considered to be the best 205-pounder in the world. He’s also at the top of many pound-for-pound lists. “Bones” only has one loss on his pro MMA record, which was a controversial disqualification back in 2009.
Still, one light heavyweight has never been impressed with Jones’ striking. That 205-pounder is Corey Anderson. Here’s what he told Fightful.
“Everybody knows Jon Jones isn’t the greatest striker. Jon is a great martial artist, but he’s not a great striker. He’s not really technical with his boxing, he’s not good at defense. His defense is very lackadaisical I feel. He’s just long so he gets away with things.”
Anderson went on to explain why Thiago Santos had success against Jones despite falling short via split decision back in 2019.
“Thiago is a really good striker. He came out running, chasing, throwing kicks and punches until he tore his knees and he was still throwing those heavy punches,” he continued. “That kind of put Jon Jones on the backfoot which made it such a good fight. Thiago did what he had to do with what he’s good at to put Jon Jones in a close decision fight. That’s why I feel he did so good in the fight.”
Jones is in the process of moving up to the heavyweight division. He vacated the UFC Light Heavyweight gold in favor of the change in weight class. Anderson has since made the move from the UFC to Bellator.
