Ramirez Looking To Stay Healthy, Safe And Active

Even under isolation, Jose Ramirez is doing all he can to better himself and his community.

The WBO and WBC Junior-Welterweight Champion had his fight with Viktor Postol postponed for the second time due to the coronavirus. The bouts were scheduled for February 1 and May 9. Speaking on a WBC call, Ramirez (25-0) stated he understands why the fight needed to be scrapped. What is going on in the world is bigger than boxing.

“I sincerely understand the importance of staying healthy,” Ramirez stated to Boxing Scene. “I understand the decision made by the state. It’s the second training camp that it’s happened to me for the same fight.

“For my part I’m going to do my best to stay focused and stay disciplined. Most importantly, I’m going to stay healthy. Once we get this thing under control we can move on with our lives. We can give the people entertainment and put smiles on their face with what we create in the ring.”

Ramirez is coming off of a TKO-win over Maurice Hooker back in July. He won the WBO Super-Welterweight Title to go along with his WBC belt. The 27-year-old won the WBC belt back in 2018, beating Amir Iman for it in 2018.

It is unknown when Ramirez will get an opportunity to fight again with the WBO postponing fights until June and promotions holding off fights for the foreseeable future. While he prepares for his return, Ramirez is looking forward to a fight against Postol and other challengers. A man who knows how important community is, Ramirez will do whatever he can to be as safe as possible.

“I understand it as an athlete and as a human being,” Ramirez went on to say. “A lot of comments have been very positive. It’s worth the wait. Hopefully, an undisputed fight against Josh Taylor [can come] very soon. For my part, I’m going to stay active in a very precautioned way.”

Ramirez will continue to care for causes like the California water drought, as well as internal issues within boxing. As the coronavirus brings us towards the unknown, “JCR” is ready for whatever and whoever comes his way.
