Ramirez-Postol Postponed For the Second Time
Third time might need be the charm for Top Rank, as they have once again had to postpone a bout between Jose Ramirez and Viktor Postol.
The bout between the two was supposed to take place on May 9 inside the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California. This was after the fight was planned for China on February 1. The initial date was called off due to the coronavirus outbreak. Now, due to the situation seemingly getting worse, Top Rank and Premier Boxing Champions made another tough call.
“I feel terribly for Jose and Viktor, who have entered two training camps, only to see the fight postponed both times,” said Top Rank’s Bob Arum. “They are consummate professionals, and they will give the great Fresno fans a memorable fight whenever it occurs. We owe it to Jose and Viktor to make this fight happen as soon as it’s safe to do so.”
Ramirez (25-0), the WBC/WBO Super-Lightweight Champion, is coming off of a TKO-win over Maurice Hooker back in July. He won the WBO Super-Welterweight Title to go along with his WBC belt. The 27-year-old won the WBC belt back in 2018, beating Amir Iman for the vacant title in 2018.
“I’m focused and will stay training and ready. Our nation’s safety must come first. We will all get through this,” Ramirez stated.
Postol (31-2) is coming off of a unanimous decision win over Mohamed Mimoune back in April to become the mandatory challenger. He is on a two-fight win streak following a 1-2 record from 2016 to the middle of 2018.
Part of the reason the fight was destined to be moved was due to a ruling by the WBO. Postponing sanctioned events until June, Top Rank almost didn’t have a choice.
Tickets bout for the May event will be valid for the new new announced date, coming at a later time.
