Randy Couture Thinks Jon Jones Achieves GOAT Status With UFC Heavyweight Title Win
MMA legend Randy Couture thinks Jon Jones will earn GOAT status if he captures the UFC Heavyweight Championship.
Jones has been in a heated debate with fight fans over whether or not Khabib Nurmagomedov deserved to surpass him on the official UFC pound-for-pound list. Jones had been sitting at the number one spot for a while but after vacating the UFC Light Heavyweight Title and Nurmagomedov defeating Justin Gaethje in dominant fashion, the undefeated “Eagle” took the top spot.
Still, Jones has already cemented himself as the MMA GOAT in the eyes of some MMA fans. Couture believes Jones still has one more thing to do before he solidifies himself as MMA’s gold standard. Here’s what “The Natural” told TMZ Sports.
“I think if Jon really wants to solidify himself as pound-for-pound, he needs to go up to heavyweight and he needs to take a shot at winning that title. And, then that erases any argument that anybody could have. I think that’s something that Jones needs to look at, and really solidly his legacy in the sports by going up and winning the heavyweight division, and showing just how technically proficient and athletic he is.”
Jones is in the process of bulking up to make the move to heavyweight. It’s unclear when Jones’ first fight at heavyweight will be. The current UFC Heavyweight Champion is Stipe Miocic. Francis Ngannou appears to be next in line for a shot at the heavyweight gold but Jones skipping the line isn’t out of the realm of possibility.
