The wait for Canelo Alvarez to have his first bout in his home country of Mexico since 2011 will continue.
It had been previously reported that Canelo vs. Avni Yildirim was likely to take place on Feb. 27. The bout was to be held in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. The location will have to change.
ESPN Deportes reports that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the hurdles of having the fight take place in Mexico were simply too great. The bout is now expected to be held in the United States.
Canelo was last seen in action on December 19. He challenged Callum Smith for the WBA (Super) and The Ring Super-Middleweight Titles. The vacant WBC gold was also up for grabs. Canelo won the fight via unanimous decision in a one-sided affair.
Yildirim is the mandatory WBC Title contender. His last bout ended in a technical decision loss to Anthony Dirrell. It was Yildirim’s failed bid for the super-middleweight gold. He’ll get another chance but this time against who many consider being the pound-for-pound best boxer in the world.
FIGHT SPORTS will keep you up to speed once a location and venue for Canelo vs. Yildirim has been revealed. Of course, we’ll also provide live coverage of the event on fight night. This will include live results and highlights.
