Report: Nick Diaz Turned Down Fight with McGregor
Two years ago, few would have believed that Nate Diaz would eclipse the star power of his older brother. But with Nick Diaz sidelined by suspensions and Nate defeating the sport’s biggest star, that changing of the guard took place in 2016. The elder Diaz, however, may be returning to the cage soon.
After a media scrum ahead of UFC 207, Dana White revealed that he has indeed been trying to get in touch with Diaz.
“I offered him a fight, he turned it down,” White told Luke Thomas of MMAFighting.
Diaz has been suspended since January of 2015, when he fought Anderson Silva in the main event of UFC 183. He tested positive for marijuana metabolites, and was given an eighteen month suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer and MMAFighting, Diaz was offered a fight with Conor McGregor. “Out of loyalty” to his brother Nate, who is 1-1 in his two bouts with McGregor in 2016, Diaz reportedly turned the fight down.
Diaz has spoken out in a number of radio interviews recently, including an appearance on Jasta Radio where he explained his current relationship with the fight game.
“Right now, I’m trying to fix my situation,” he said. “If someone offered me a fight right now, it’s not going to happen. I’m not going to say (yes). I’m like ’no’. I’m going to work my way into the right situation and once I’m there then we can talk about a fight.”
