The UFC 253 PPV buys are reportedly in.
UFC 253 took place on September 26. In the main event, Israel Adesanya put his UFC Middleweight Championship on the line against Paulo Costa. Adesanya ended up putting on a dominant showing, stopping “Borrachinha” in the second round via TKO.
The co-main event also featured a title fight. Jan Blachowicz shared the Octagon with Dominick Reyes for the vacant UFC Light-Heavyweight Championship. Blachowicz ended up scoring the second-round TKO victory to become the UFC Light-Heavyweight Champion.
Mike Coppinger of The Athletic is reporting that UFC 253 brought in over 700,000 pay-per-view buys worldwide. This is the third-highest drawing UFC PPV in 2020. UFC 253 is only behind UFC 251 (1.3 million) and UFC 246 (1 million).
Many have expressed their belief that Adesanya is a star. “The Last Stylebender” has certainly garnered attention throughout his run in the UFC. He captured the 185-pound title back in October 2019, stopping Robert Whittaker via second-round TKO. Adesanya’s victory over Costa marked his second successful title defense.
Adesanya’s bad blood with Costa will likely be credited for the high PPV number. The addition of another title fight in the co-main event can’t be ignored either as it likely gave the UFC 253 PPV a solid boost as well.
