Rey Vargas Faces O’Shaquie Foster For Vacant WBC Junior Lightweight Title
They will meet in February.
Rey Vargas is looking to become a three-division champion.
The current WBC featherweight champion will reportedly take on O’Shaquie Foster in a Showtime main event on February 11 from the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
Vargas (36-0, 22 KOs) earned his first belt in February 2017 when he defeated Gavin McDonnell in England for the WBC title at 122 lbs. He successfully defended that title from August 2017 to July 2019.
He became a champion again when he overcame a knockdown and took the WBC title from Mark Magsayo in July.
Vargas had previously called out Leo Santa Cruz to unify the featherweight titles, but that fell apart. Cruz was also recently stripped of the title.
Now, he looks to pick up one of the belts that Shakur Stevenson vacated in September. The then two-belt champion missed weight, but has since moved up to lightweight.
For Foster, this will mark his first world title shot. He has been on a nine-fight winning streak since dropping a split decision to Rolando Chinea.
But in Foster’s last two outings, he recorded a unanimous decision win against Muhammadkhuja Yaqubov and knocked out Miguel Roman before that.
Subriel Matias and Jeremias Ponce will also be on the card as they fight for the vacant IBF junior welterweight title.
