Ribas-VanZant Reportedly Set For July 11 ‘Fight Island’ Bout
It looks like the social media squabbles between Amanda Ribas and Paige VanZant will end in the octagon. Combate is reporting that Ribas and VanZant will finally face off against one another. July 11 appears to be when the bout will be taking place. The two strawweights will be fighting in the flyweight division.
This is a bout Ribas (9-1) has been waiting to compete in for a long time. She believes fighting VanZant is the perfect opportunity for her. Ribas has been calling her out to fight via social media and through her husband Austin Vanderford. Ranked 15th in the UFC’s strawweight rankings, Ribas is on a four-fight win streak and 3-0 in the UFC. Her last fight was in March, beating Randa Markos via unanimous decision.
VanZant (8-4) is on a one-fight win streak, having last fought in January. She beat Rachael Ostovich via submission, coming into the fight with a preexisting injury. Not ranked in the division, VanZant suffered the injury at the hands of Jessica-Rose Clark in January 2018, forcing her to wait a year to compete. “12 Gauge” is 2-3 in her last five fights.
VanZant was originally supposed to face Ribas at UFC Brasilia. Suffering a fracture in her arm, Markos ended up taking her place. This is the last fight on VanZant’s UFC contract.
As far as where they will fight, VanZant teased a “Fight Island” appearance on her Instagram, with the caption reading: “Coming to an island near you…….”
