Ricky Hatton’s Cause Of Death Confirmed, Questions Remain Surrounding Intent

A senior coroner has confirmed that Ricky Hatton’s cause of death was strangulation as a result of hanging, but it is still unknown if he intended to take his own life.

Initially, authorities could not determine Hatton’s cause of death, and the fact that there was no note or previous signs of suicidal tendencies was what brought the thought of there being something else to the story into the minds of many.

During the coroner’s inquest hearing, Hatton’s son stated that he noticed a considerable decline in his father’s memory in recent years, and firmly believes that his father’s death was not planned. This, coupled with the statement from the coroner that there were signs of CTE found during the neurological post-mortem autopsy, leaves much room for question on what led to Hatton’s death.

“He had made significant future plans and no notes were found indicating he intended to take his own life.

“I have listened very carefully to all the evidence. When I add everything together, I cannot be satisfied he intended to take his own life.

“Therefore, it is not possible in law for me to conclude suicide. I have concluded a narrative verdict.

“His intention remains unclear as he was under the influence of alcohol and the neuropathological post-mortem found evidence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy and that’s the conclusion I draw.”
