Roach Talks “Unlikely” Rematch
Last week before Manny Pacquiao faced Keith Thurman in Las Vegas, Freddie Roach claimed his fighter would defeat Thurman (he did) and call out Floyd Mayweather for a rematch (he did not).
Mayweather was at ringside for the majority decision win by the 40-year-old Filipino Senator, but has continued to insist that he is retired and will only put on the gloves in highly paid “exhibitions.”
Pacquiao’s trainer would bypass his earlier remarks following the win over Thurman at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, and confirmed that they’d wait to decide on what’s next.
“Someone just asked me ‘What’s next?’,” Roach told Agence France. “Well, you know what? We don’t need to think about what’s next for a while.
“Manny can go away and rest and we’ll think about it later on. We need to see what’s out there.”
“I can’t see it,” Roach said of a Mayweather-Pacquiao rematch, backtracking his prior statement.
“Floyd’s retired and his people say there is no interest. But there will be other options.”
