Rocky Marciano Ends Career With Best Undefeated Record In Heavyweight History – September 21, 1955 (This Day In Boxing History)
Sixty-six years ago today marked the final fight of Rocky Marciano’s career, cementing the best undefeated record in heavyweight boxing history.
Marciano (49-0, 43 KOs) knocked out another all-time great Archie Moore (186-23-10, 132 KOs) in the ninth round at Yankee Stadium to retain his National Boxing Association – now called WBA – world heavyweight strap.
Marciano scored the knockout after briefly falling to an early knockdown himself.
“He was a fighter, that’s what he was,” Moore said. “There was only one Rocky Marciano.”
