Rocky Marciano Knocks Out Ezzard Charles To Retain Heavyweight Belt – September 17, 1954 (This Day In Boxing History)
Some boxing fans say Rocco Marciano is a legendary fighter lost in history.
Sixty-seven years ago, Marciano – whose birth name was Rocco Marchegiano – successfully defended his NBA – now called WBA – world heavyweight title by knocking out former heavyweight champion Ezzard Charles in a rematch.
“Ezzard Charles was the toughest man I ever fought,” Marciano said after the fight. “I learned what pain was all about when I fought him.”
Ring Magazine named the showdown Fight of the Year.
Marciano is the only heavyweight champion to retire undefeated.
