Roman Gonzalez-Juan Francisco Estrada Trilogy Fight Set For March 5
Ring Magazine and WBA champion, Juan Francisco Estrada will take on Roman Gonzalez for the third time on March 5. The fight will take place at the Pechanga Arena in San Diego, California.
Estrada (42-3, 28 KOs) and Gonzalez (50-3, 41 KOs) have a knack for putting on a show every time they enter the ring.
The first time both boxers fought was in November 2012. Gonzalez clinched the victory via unanimous decision.
Estrada came back strongly into the contest with a late rally, but the judges felt that it was insufficient to declare him the winner. They had their rematch in March 2021 with Estrada avenging the first clash’s loss. The WBA titlist was declared the winner by split decision.
The fight drew controversy as ringside media and several social media users felt like Gonzalez was robbed of a win.
Since Estrada lost to Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in February 2018, he has been on a roll, having won six fights in a row.
This includes a win in a rematch against Rungvisai 14 months later. Both super fights went down at The Forum in Inglewood, California.
As for Gonzalez, his story involves Rungvisai as well. The 34-year-old was believed to nosedive in his career after losing two fights in a row, both to Rungvisai in 2017.
However, he went on to beat Moises Fuentes and Diomel Diocos later before clinching the WBA junior bantamweight strap from Khalid Yafai in February 2020.
Gonzalez was crowned the champion after he knocked Yafai out in the ninth round before dropping him twice earlier in the fight.
