WBA Welterweight Champion Rolando Romero (17-2) addressed the breakdown of talks for a unification with WBO Welterweight Champion Devin Haney, accusing him of being “deceitful” and “ducking.”
The comments come as Romero seeks his first fight since the upset victory over Ryan Garcia on May 2, 2025, in Times Square—a win that earned him the WBA welterweight title. Negotiations for a Romero vs. Haney unification bout appeared to be in the final stages last month, but talks broke down. Haney previously took to X to call Rolly “delusional,” claiming the fight hasn’t been made because the WBA champion “can’t sell.”
Romero dismissed claims that his financial demands were the hurdle. Romero believes the Haney camp was looking for an exit strategy. Romero also turned his sights on Conor Benn, who has been calling for a shot at the WBA belt. Following Benn’s decision win over Regis Prograis last Saturday (April 11), Romero ridiculed the performance.
“I told you they were just lying the whole time. They just didn’t want to fight,” said Rolly to Fight Hub TV. “We’re putting up all the money. It’s a 50/50 split. Bet on yourself. Conor Benn is a future Hall of Famer because whoever knocks him out cold is going to be in the Hall of Fame,” Romero said
