Rothwell Welcomes The Challenge Of Saint Preux To Heavyweight
In his quest to solve the number of light heavyweights going to the heavyweight division, Ben Rothwell will have his turn to face off against submission specialist Ovince Saint Preux on May 13. Despite his unique arsenal of skills, Rothwell is not worried about facing off against a new challenge.
Inside the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida, Rothwell (37-12), who has six wins via submision, will look to solve Saint Preux (24-13), who has eight wins via submission. OSP has won four fights via the Von Flue choke, making him extremely dangerous. Speaking with MMA Junkie, Rothwell discussed the move that has taken out the likes of Michal Oleksiejczuk, Yushin Okami, Marcos Rogerio de Lima, and Nikita Krylov.
“It’s effective,” Rothwell stated. “If he locks it up, it’s like a lot of submissions. If they’re locked up you’re going to be in trouble. I like to believe there’s a way out of everything. It will be a welcomed challenge. He’s got to do a lot of work to get to there.”
Weighing in at 265, Rothwell is a much bigger opponent than Saint Preux (240.5) is used to. Known for being in the 205 division, Saint Preux is confident in his ability. Rothwell is under the assumption that fighters who come up from the light heavyweight to the heavyweight division are hoping for a speed advantage over those who are used to heavyweight fighting. It is up to him to prove that theory wrong against Saint Preux.
Rothwell was supposed to face another light heavyweight in Gian Villante before the coronavirus pandemic postponed those plans. With a new challenge, Rothwell is hoping to be a gatekeeper for the true heavyweights in the division.
UFC Jacksonville, or UFC on ESPN+ 29, will have a main event that features Anthony Smith v. Glover Teixeira in a light heavyweight bout.
