Ruiz vs. Joshua 2 Live Results

Repeat or revenge — it’s time to make history again.

Six months after pulling off arguably boxing’s biggest upset since James “Buster” Douglas knocked out Mike Tyson, Andy Ruiz Jr. defends the WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight championships against the man he won the belts from in New York, Anthony Joshua.

The fight headlines a Matchroom Boxing card at a specially made arena in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia, and marks Joshua’s contractually-obligated rematch clause.

The pair first met at Madison Square Garden on June 1, with Ruiz filling in for Jarrell Miller on one month’s notice after Miller failed pre-fight drug tests. Many expected Joshua to make easy work of Ruiz, but that same audience was thrown for a loop.

Things looked great for Joshua at the start of the original fight, scoring a knockdown of Ruiz in the third before going in for the kill. But Ruiz caught Joshua with a perfectly-timed counter to stun him, and the Mexican-American dropped Joshua twice in that same third round — considered one of the greatest rounds in heavyweight boxing history. Ruiz then dropped Joshua twice more in the seventh before the referee waved off the contest, giving Ruiz the championships and handing the Brit his first professional defeat.

The win over Joshua marked Ruiz’s fourth straight win since his sole loss in 34 professional contests — a December 2016 fight with Joseph Parker for the then-vacant WBO heavyweight title. Ruiz lost that bout by majority decision, but some felt Ruiz deserved the nod in the close contest. Ruiz-Joshua II, meanwhile, marks the first time Joshua enters a fight with no current major world title belts to his name since knocking out Charles Martin for the IBF championship in June 2016. Joshua then won the WBA title by stopping Wladimir Klitschko before defeating Parker for the WBO strap.

One of this card’s co-feature bouts will see Alexander Povetkin, the final man Joshua successfully retained the unified heavyweight titles against, take on Michael Hunter. The other will see the return of Dillian Whyte, who defeated Oscar Rivas for the interim WBC heavyweight title and mandatory challenger status this summer but was suspended of those honors after a failed drug test — one he was recently cleared of. Whyte will face Mariusz Wach.

Heavyweights lay out the rest of the action as well, with Filip Hrgovic fighting Eric Molina and Mahammadrasul Majidov doing battle with Tom Little.

It’s time to bear witness to history again — a regaining of gold or another upset.
