Ryan Garcia, Javier Fortuna Reaches Deal For July 16 Bout
Ryan Garcia has found a new opponent – and it’s not Isaac Cruz.
Garcia (22-0, 18 KOs) reached a deal to face Javier Fortuna (37-3-1 26 KOs) in a 12-round main event on July 16 at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, Boxing Scene reported. All parties declined to comment because the fight has not been officially announced.
Garcia was originally supposed to fight top contender Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz, but those plans fell through because Cruz’s team said he already has a fight planned for August.
Garcia returned from a 15-month hiatus with a unanimous decision win against Emmanul Tagoe in April in San Antonio, Texas. He was absent from the ring due to a mental health break.
Some boxing fans weren’t too convinced of Garcia’s win over Tagoe.
For Fortuna, he got back into the winning column with a first-round knockout of Rafael Hernandez in February.
Before the WBC ordering Garcia to face Cruz, Fortuna was actually next in line for the former WBC interim lightweight champion.
And now he gets his chance again.
