Ryan Garcia & Oscar Duarte Kick Off Press Conference

Ryan Garcia and Oscar Duarte held their first presser ahead of their fight on December 2nd, 2023.

The bout marks Garcia’s first fight under Derrick James, following the decision to move up to junior welterweight in the aftermath of the defeat to Gervonta Davis. In the biggest bout of his career, Garcia was stopped in the seventh round to suffer the first defeat of his career.

The decision to hire James was seen as a rebuild for Garcia, following criticism of his defensive skills at the elite level. While that may be the case, it is not Garcia’s first bout at 140. The boxer faced Javier Fortuna at 140, putting in a dominant performance in a sixth-round-stoppage win. Standing in the boxer’s way this time is Duarte. The latter is on an 11-fight knockout streak, and therefore, poses a real test of Garcia’s resolve. With that being said, here were the key highlights from the presser.

Highlights

“I’m motivated, ready to show that I belong in this sport,” Garcia

“Oscar is a challenge. He’s fast, he’s strong, he’s got good timing, so it just made sense for me,” Garcia

“Thank God for this opportunity to showcase my skills again, come back and hopefully get a title at 140,” Garcia

“Come December 2nd I’m gonna shine. It’s gonna be a great fight…and I’m going to make Mexico proud, Duarte”
