Ryan Garcia’s new trainer, Derrick James, has stated that his fighter is ready to face Rolando Romero immediately for his WBA 140 lb title.
The opportunity could present itself to Garcia at a time when he is coming off a loss in the biggest fight of his career against Gervonta Davis.
Garcia suffered a seventh-round TKO loss after failing to get up from a body shot. The star faced extensive criticism over his failure to get up, especially since Garcia stood up after the referee had counted him out.
So the fact that Garcia’s trainer is ready to throw his fighter in at the deep end raises a few questions.
First, it would suggest that Garcia is comfortable with James’ methods, despite having not worked with him in a single fight.
Secondly, it may indicate that the Garcia camp does not view Romero as a dangerous opponent. Regardless of the case, Garcia has a chance to return to big-time boxing.
“He’s a great worker, he’s really focused, and he’s really engaged. I talked to him a week and a half ago because he’s on vacation right now. So we’ll get back get back to the gym in a week or so.
“You can always change. He’s 24. and AJ was able to change, so there’s no difference. Everybody can change. The younger they are, the better they can become.
“I don’t think he needs an extra tune-up fight for Rolly. With Rolly, who can you get to help you? At the same time, he may not need a tune-up fight for that. I hope he sees that too,” James
