Ryan Garcia Says Spence Was ‘High’ Before The Crawford Loss

Ryan Garcia took aim at Errol Spence Jr. over his departure from his ex-trainer Derrick James, saying his former stablemate was ‘high’ before his fight with Terence Crawford

Crawford stopped Spence in the ninth round in his first career loss, getting dropped three times. Spence never looked himself, getting bullied by the smaller Crawford. There were suggestions Spence suffered from the 147 weight cut. A rematch never took place, while Spence underwent cataract surgery on his right eye with the aim of bouncing back. Spence’s current focus is to face the WBO and WBC Junior Middleweight Champion Sebastian Fundora. Before he can consider that, he needs a new trainer. James addressed the recent split, stating he would like to see Spence rematch Crawford.

“I’m focused on my other guys. We talked three weeks ago. You can’t look back. You can’t look forward and look back at the same time. Mentally, I guess he’s OK. I believe when you [participate in your biggest fight and lose], when the song stops playing, you’ve gotta dance or start putting that chair up. If he’s healthy and everything’s good with him, he can keep doing what he’s doing. If you’re gonna fight, [the rematch]is the fight to fight. Finish that deal out,” James stated

James never gave the reason for the split, but reports indicated it was a dispute over pay. Garcia was one of Spence’s stablemates, having trained in the same gym. Now, Garcia has reacted and blamed Spence for not being loyal since James did guide him to becoming the former Unified Welterweight Champion. He also claimed Spence was high before his Crawford loss.

“You folded. You didn’t want to pay him some money/ It’s all business, but still. I paid him more for a fight I made less [than Errol against Crawford], and he’s been with you his whole career. How did I pay Derrick more [than you] on a fight I made less? Errol was high as f***. The guy couldn’t even form a sentence,” Garcia said
