Ryan Garcia’s Sparring Footage Sparks Criticism

Ryan Garcia dropped his sparring partner in the boxer’s latest training footage.

Garcia faces Devin Haney on April 20 as he tries to win the WBC Junior Welterweight Belt. Much has been said about Garcia’s mental health in the build-up. He has admitted to smoking weed and drinking alcohol. His social media activity has also divided boxing fans, who are concerned he is not prepared to beat Haney.

However, the following footage shows Garcia’s main asset: his power. Garcia lands a left hook, followed by a straight right down the pipe, knocking his sparring partner down. Fans speculated who the sparring partner could be, suggesting it was Frank Martin. While that has not been established, Garcia’s power was clear.

The Haney fight will test Garcia’s patience. The Dream is defensively sound, with a slick boxing style. However, his prior fights have shown he can be wobbled. Jorge Linares wobbled Haney’s legs in their 2021 fight. If Garcia lands something similar, Haney could be in for a long night. But Haney’s last fight against Regis Prograis showed he does pack a punch.

He dropped Prograis with his right hand and prevented the former champion from using his biggest weapon: his left hand. Garcia did receive criticism for posting his sparring. Some suggested it may have been staged, whilst others questioned the quality of sparring. Garcia looked much bigger than his oppoent, with fans feeling he could not replicate this against Haney.
