Sam Eggington’s Promoter Hails Boxer For Throwing 1,317 Punches Against Bilel Jkitou
British boxer Sam Eggington has drawn massive attention after delivering a whopping 1,317 punches against Bilel Jkitou at the Coventry Skydome Arena last Friday night.
The Birmingham star defended his WBC silver middleweight crown, awing his promoter Mick Hennessy and the entire boxing community in the process.
“I’ve promoted some of the best fights and boxers in the world and I knew that this was going to be a great fight, but it eclipsed that and developed into a classic,” Hennessy said.
British boxing great Joe Calzaghe registered 1,006 punches in the Jeff Lacy bout held in 2006. However, Eggington has put even Calzaghe’s record to shame, averaging 109 punches per round.
Hennessy feels that selling a pay-per-view fight in the boxing industry has become too easy these days, but everyone should realize how big of a deal Eggington is.
“We’re in an era of easy payday prima donna boxers in non-PPV worthy fights and broadcasters and media who are more attracted by YouTubers and social media celebrities fighting each other,” the promoter claimed. “Sam is a throwback to a time of real fighting men and has been seriously overlooked by the mainstream broadcasters and media.”
The 27-year-old won Friday’s contest via split decision.
