Sanchez: GGG Could Fight Saunders, Murata Next
Soon after Gennady Golovkin lost his unified middleweight titles against Canelo Alvarez, Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez had another Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA).
In that AMA, Sanchez answered fans’ questions and part of the conversation revolved around Golovkin’s future. Although it may be some time before Golovkin returns to the ring, Sanchez did reveal possible opponents for Golovkin: the winner of the WBO middleweight title fight between Billy Joe Saunders and Demetrius Andrade as well as WBA “regular” middleweight champion Ryota Murata.
“Either BJ Saunders for the WBO title, or whoever wins with Andrade and BJS, or Ryoto Murata who is the WBA regular champion,” Sanchez said.
Whatever Golovkin’s future has in store, Sanchez did want to make one thing clear and that is the possibility of Golovkin retiring after the September 15 loss to Alvarez.
“Absolutely not. WE have other fights that are possible, the Saunders fight, the Murata fight which is very possible, those are fights that motivate him,” Sanchez said.
Golovkin lost his WBA “super” and WBC middleweight titles to Alvarez by majority decision in Las Vegas in the rematch of their September 2017 fight that ended in a split draw. The full AMA can be seen at this link.
