Sasaki Upsets Olympic Champion at Hohhot

Takeshi Sasaki of Japan pulled off one of the biggest upsets at the 2018 Hohhot Grand Prix, defeating former Olympic champion Khasan Khalmurzaev of Russia to win the gold medal in the U81kg category.

Sasaki, who only debuted on the IJF World Tour back in December, defeated Khalmurzaev in just 65 seconds.

Sasaki won his semi-final bout against Anri Egutidze of Portugal after Egutidze was penalized three times, while Khalmurzaev defeated Seungsu Lee in a one-sided contest in the other semifinal.

Bronze medals were won by Lee and Alan Khubetsov of Australia. Lee defeated Matthias Casse of Belgium with a waza-ari 17 seconds into golden time. Khubetsov defeated Egutidze after an ouchi-ko-soto combination in golden score.
