Saunders-Canelo If Kovalev Falls Through?

Canelo Alvarez is eyeing a move up to light heavyweight, and hopes to face WBO light heavyweight champion, Sergey Kovalev.

Yet, the Russian born fighter must first get through a showdown with mandatory challenger Anthony Yarde on August 24th in Kovalev’s hometown of Chelyabinsk.

“The one fight that Canelo wants right now more than anything is Kovalev and he’s prepared to wait until August 24 to see what happens then,” Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn said.

“If Kovalev wins that fight, I’m 99 percent sure he will fight Canelo next,” said Hearn, but he also forwarded an idea for one of his fighters.

“If Kovalev doesn’t win the fight or gets injured, Billy Joe Saunders is right up there as an option for Canelo.”

Saunders, a former WBO middleweight champion, who moved up to super middleweight in 2019, is set for a return later this year and won the vacant WBO 168 pound crown,  may not immediately face Alvarez, but Hearn rules nothing out.

“It is important that he keeps active,” Hearn said. “He hasn’t been that for the last 18 months for one reason or another. He probably hasn’t got some of the fights he has wanted in the past because he is so good. But he has a much better chance of those fights happening now.”
