Saunders: Derevyanchenko Fight Will Age GGG

It has been a while since Gennady Golovkin has been tested. Many say the Canelo fights were the key bouts. While he is choosing GGG to beat Sergiy Derevyanchenko, Billy Joe Saunders believes it will come with a heavy price.

The WBO Super Middleweight Champion spoke to Sky Sports about the upcoming fight inside Madison Square Garden. While a true battle between two solid fighters is expected, Saunders sees more than that.

“It’s a fight that, you could say, will not be skillful. It will be a scrap,” Saunders stated. “This fight is not about standing back technically, ping ping ping. This will be crash, bang, wallop. It will be over quickly. Whoever the winner, it will be a war. This is a fight for Golovkin which will take the edge off him. It will put a bit more age on him.”

Golovkin (39-1-1) is coming off of a round-four knockout of Steve Rolls back in June. The 37-year-old faces Derevyanchenko (13-1), a man who beat Jack Culcay back in April via unanimous decision. Prior to that, he fought in a very close matchup against Daniel Jacobs, losing via split decision.

The fight between GGG and Derevyanchenko takes place on October 5 in New York City. Both will be fighting for the vacant IBF and IBO Middleweight Titles.
