Saunders Ready to Unify with GGG
Though the middleweight fight everyone wants to see is Gennady Golovkin vs. Canelo Alvarez, GGG may return to the ring before that rumored September fight. Golovkin has reportedly been in negotiations to face WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders, looking to capture the last 160 lb. title he hasn’t won yet.
After Golovkin’s unanimous decision victory over Danny Jacobs, his promoters began negotiating with Saunders with the hopes to bring the fight to Golovkin’s home country of Kazakhstan in June.
Saunders says that he is ready for GGG, but he says he needs a contract soon if he is going to commit to the fight.
“I’m just waiting on the contracts being sent. I need to know soon because I need to move my own career on,” Saunders exclusively told World Boxing News.
“Obviously, I would love a dream unification fight and I’m willing to travel to Kazakhstan. Willing to fight in his backyard and give him everything his own way. I just want to know as we are ten weeks out, will he fight or will he not?”
There is one potentially major roadblock that would keep Golovkin and his team from making the fight. Golden Boy Promotions has denounced the GGG-Saunders fight, saying that if it happens in June, it will seriously jeopardize a September fight against Canelo. As the Canelo fight is the most important for Golovkin and for the sport of boxing as a whole, Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler will look to be on the same page as Golden Boy before making any other decisions.
