Saunders Reuniting with Ben Davison
Ben Davison may have lost Tyson Fury as a fighter but he has re-gained one, as the trainer will be re-pairing with WBO super middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders.
Saunders, who split from Dominic Ingle about 10 months ago, has trained under Davison previously before he committed fully to working with Fury.
Saunders last competed in November as part of the KSI-Logan Paul II undercard, retaining his WBO 168-pound title with an 11th-round finish of Marcelo Esteban Coceres. Saunders was reportedly down on the scorecards before getting the TKO.
“I’ve known Billy Joe for a while. I’ve even helped him put game plans together for fights that I have not worked. We’re back together,” Davison said. “Billy Joe has never been given an opportunity for the top fighters. He needs the motivation and fear factor in order to perform. He needs to be given an opportunity to test himself against the best. Boxing opponents like Coceres isn’t going to do it.
“I’ve been through it with Fury in his last fight [with Otto Wallin]. He needed that fear factor, too. Sometimes fighters perform at their best to the opponent’s skill level. But every time Billy Joe has been in a test, he’s always come through.”
Davison did not comment on his split with Fury but wished the heavyweight nothing but the best.
He adds he expects Saunders to be named Canelo Alvarez’s next opponent. It was reported last week Alvarez is targeting a super middleweight title bout with Saunders on May 2.
